Lesson books provide sufficient practice for some students. But I find that generally, many students need more practice songs (or longer songs) that help them develop a mastery of certain chords, keys, and technique skills.

Little Lamb, Little Wolves

This song is for students at early level 2, or late level 1 with capacity. It focuses on C Major, D Minor, and C Minor but keeps the student close to notes they are generally comfortable with, except for a few high notes. It introduces one set of unusual fingering to increase technical capacity.

Nearly everyone has heard the song “Mary had a Little Lamb”. And one day, while writing an exercise using this melody, I began to think of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf and Red riding hood. So, I thought what if instead of the pig or Red, the wolves went after Mary’s little lamb? This little exercise was born.

Walking on Water

Walking on Water is an original song I wrote, originally, to force myself to play in harder key. What started as a “study” quickly became a song. I let it sit for a bit, then came back later to develop it so that it told more of a story. Part of that process was also a challenge to write the song for multiple skill levels.
